Sept. 2002 This Active Life -- Member Profiles

Stephen Smallwood

Background
I teach high school speech, debate, and drama in the Broken Bow Public Schools in Southeastern Oklahoma. In addition, I'm currently serving as mayor of my small town. While a member of NEA, I've been a building rep, three-time local president, and currently serve on the NEA Board of Directors.

What Do I Plan to Do in Retirement
I plan to begin a second career to augment my retirement income, although I haven't decided on the focus yet. I hope to work as a consultant, either to an educational institution or an educational provider. I'll also work in my garden, travel, and volunteer in my community and at my alma mater, the Rattan Public Schools.

Modena Carter

Background
I taught health and Mississippi history at Higgins Junior High School in Clarksdale, Mississippi, until retiring in 2001. I've served as local president, state secretary/ treasurer, and teacher-to-teacher trainer.

How the Association has Helped Me
I joined the NEA because my mother told me not to go into a classroom without becoming a member. She made my first dues payment. The Association has provided many training opportunities and helped me enhance my skills at public speaking and in managing people. Many people focus on NEA's role in protecting their rights, but don't neglect local and state professional training opportunities.

Linda Somo

Background
I was a high school English teacher for eight years and a counselor for 21 years, mostly in Mesa, Arizona. I've been a local president bargaining spokesperson and served in a variety of roles with the Arizona Education Association. At the national level, I've participated in the NEA Board of Directors, the Resolutions Committee, and the Membership Services and Affiliate Relationships Committee.

Tips for Potential NEA Leaders
There are plenty of leadership opportunities--all you have to do is ask what needs doing and be willing to help! The Association provides excellent training to help you gain the skills you need. Throughout my career as an active and a retired member, I learned leadership skills that boosted my confidence enough to even run for public office. The Association enables you to have a voice in what you do and become an advocate for public education.
