Listen to NEA's radio advertising. The selections are offered in MP3 audio format.

This is Why We Are
NEA President Reg Weaver recalls the passion for teaching he’s felt over a 30-year career: “There’s no feeling like seeing children’s eyes brighten up as they discover a world of opportunity.” He reminds listeners in his May radio spot that we're a team fighting for great public schools -- including smaller class sizes, adequate funding, and access to a rigorous curriculum -- for every child.
English (MP3) | Español (MP3), :60 seconds.

Books Open a Brighter Future

"The first time a parent, grandparent or sibling picks up a book and opens it with a child, the future burns brighter." In his March radio message timed to coincide with NEA's Read Across America, Reg Weaver says the 11-year history of the event fits well into the century-and-a-half mission of the 3.2-million member association: "The pictures and sounds of reading build a foundation of achievement in both school and life."
English (MP3) | Español (MP3), :60 seconds.

We Won't Sleep on the Issues

President Bush's final State of the Union address and the presidential primaries provide critical context to our advocacy on behalf of children and public education. NEA President Reg Weaver in his January radio message says our 3.2 million members are staying active in the fight to close the gap between political talk and action when it comes to ensuring a great public school for every child. NEA, says Weaver, is seizing every opportunity to push for smaller class sizes, competitive educator salaries, and higher academic standards. Listen now and get active.
English (MP3) | Español (MP3), :60 seconds.

Let's Hold Members of Congress Accountable in 2008

Resolutions for the new year are all about improving ourselves and NEA President Reg Weaver hopes we lose pounds of apathy while adding plenty of advocacy muscle. In his December ABC Radio Network message, he urges listeners to speak out for education, including adequate school funding and closing achievement gaps. Listen now, then make your voice heard all the way to the nation's capital. English (MP3) | Español (MP3), :30 seconds.

"Hold Congress Accountable"

NEA President Reg Weaver doesn't need convincing. But others, including many elected officials, need to be convinced of the importance of class size, teacher quality and multiple measures when it comes to student success. In his November radio message, Reg urges listeners to the ABC Radio Network in both English and Spanish to hold members of Congress accountable for what they say and do regarding public education. Listeners are urged to click to nea.org to find out how to make themselves heard in Washington.

It's labeling season in Washington, D.C.

As part of the so-called "No Child Left Behind" law, the federal government is telling parents across the country their schools and their children have failed.

I'm Reg Weaver, president of the National Education Association.

Eleven thousand public schools are already being punished, losing their federal funding and their local control.

Thousands more face penalties, all because of the government's one-size-fits-all approach to testing and school reform.

While your community pays for Washington's mandates, the federal government is actually cutting its financial commitment to public education.

The National Education Association believes that if the federal government is going to pass mandates, it should pay to implement those mandates.

That's why NEA is working in Congress and the courts to fully fund the so-called "No Child Left Behind" law.

May 3rd is National Teacher Day – a day to honor America's classroom teachers.

I'm Reg Weaver, president of the National Education Association.

Let's celebrate the contributions America's teachers make to our nation, but let's also recognize the challenges we face.

America's public schools will need more than 2 million new teachers in the next decade.

One out of every three new teachers leaves the profession during their first three years of employment.

And half leave by their fifth year of teaching.

Class sizes are too large.

Pay is too low.

And "No Child Left Behind" forces many schools to act like testing factories, making it hard to give children the individual attention teachers want to provide.

It's time to change all that, with professional salaries to recruit people to teach, and changes to the so-called "No Child Left Behind" law to really help students achieve success in school – and in life.

Walk around any American college and university and you'll see the best and brightest from every country around the world.

In fact, many countries pay the full cost for their best students to attend college in the United States.

So why is our government making it harder for American students to go to college?

The Administration's budget cuts tens of thousands of students from the Pell Grant program, America's number one program for helping our young people get a college degree.

And there's level and reduced funding for dozens of other programs that help American young people go to college.

Kids who read -- and kids who are read to -- do better in school and better in life.

This week, more than 40 million students, parents, grandparents, teachers and education support professionals are taking part in NEA's Read Across America.

But reading can't be just a one-day event. Kids need to experience the joy of reading every day.

NEA's Read Across America is one example of NEA's work to make sure every child has a public school as great as America's best public schools.

NEA is working for adequate funding, strong parental involvement, and a highly qualified teacher in every classroom.

So this week, take a moment and read to a child. And we can all celebrate their success together.

It's common sense.
High-achieving students require high-quality teachers.

I'm Reg Weaver, president of the National Education Association.

There are achievement gaps between students from our most affluent schools and those from our poorer, oftentimes minority schools.

To close the gaps we need adequate funding and strong parental involvement.

And we need a quality teacher in every classroom, certified in the subjects that they teach.

NEA is working to improve teacher quality in schools where students face the greatest challenges in academic achievement.

We're partnering with organizations like the Tom Joyner Foundation to help teachers meet the highest standards of our profession. Policymakers, parents and NEA members are focusing on school improvement.

'Testing' Radio Spot

REG WEAVER:

I'm Reg Weaver – President of the National Education Association

Testing is important to a child's education –
It helps parents, teachers, and education support professionals –
Evaluate a student's progress –
And develop plans for improvement.

But a new federal law –
The so-called "No Child Left Behind" Act –
Carries testing to extremes –

The new law means every student must take federally required tests – every single year –

And all students are expected to achieve at the same level – at the same time!

And worst of all – those test results become the only measure of a child's success.

That's not right!

If a few students do poorly on a test –
The entire school gets labeled as a failure.

It's not testing to help students –
It's testing for political headlines –
And it's wrong!

Congress needs to put students first –
And fix the law –

REG WEAVER:

There's a reason they're called — public — schools —

I'm Reg Weaver — President of the National Education Association.

America's public schools.
The place where every child gets the chance
To be challenged and inspired
To discover potential — to find success —

That's why public schools belong to all of us —

This public opportunity is also a public responsibility —
To be involved in decisions about —
How public schools work —
How they're funded —
And how well they meet the needs of every child —

We meet that responsibility by electing men and women to public office who support children and public education —

So — as this political year continues —
As the debate gets more intense —
Our responsibility is clear —
Let's remember to ask the right questions —

Which of the candidates will keep the promise —
Of great public schools —
For every child?

Teaching is helping children learn –
The way they learn best –

The so-called "No Child Left Behind" Act –

Great public schools give individual attention to every child
And a qualified teacher in every classroom.

But a new federal law –
the so-called "No Child Left Behind" Act –
Has the wrong priorities –

It forces students into a "one-size-fits-all" mandate –
And creates more bureaucracy and paperwork –

Join your local teachers and education support professionals –
Ask Congress to fix the law –
