NEA President's Radio Message Urges NCLB Changes
NEA President Reg Weaver is urging parents, teachers, and other public education supporters to help "hold Congress accountable" for improving schools by making positive changes to the federal No Child Left Behind education law.
Congress is considering reauthorization of the five-year-old NCLB act, which is the current version of the Elementary and Secondary Education Act (ESEA).
Weaver is delivering his message in English and Spanish in a radio spot being broadcast throughout the country on ABC network programs Nov. 5-16. Listen to the spot (en español).
In the message, the NEA President says:
I know you're concerned about crowded classrooms.
I know you want clean, safe schools and quality teachers.
I know you believe a student's success in school should be determined by more than a single test.
So I'm not the one you need to convince. But there are others who need to hear from you, our elected officials whose decisions affect the lives of students every day.
So here's what you do...
Stay informed. Pay attention to what Congress is doing and saying about education.
He urges listeners to add their voices "to the sea of concerned parents and educators who believe a child is more than a test and great public schools are a basic right." Weaver concludes, "Together, we can hold Congress accountable for what they say and do!"
