Public School Custodians Are the "Gatekeepers to the Community"

Some public schools employ security officers. Considering current conditions, many unfortunately still do not. Given the existing environment, every school adult must play a part in public school security.

Any plan to protect students and staff should always include the custodian. Has the district provided training for custodians? Have they appropriately included them in the "intruder response plan?" Professional development should include meaningful training in such areas as:

  • Local police contact and liaison
  • Professionally developed intruder response plan
  • Dealing with disruptive students
  • Individual employee liability
  • District policy
