We all have reason to be concerned about the statistics on new teacher retention: Nearly 50 percent of teachers leave the profession within the first five years, and 20 percent leave after just one year. NEA-Retired is leading the charge to support fledgling teachers with its Intergenerational Mentoring Program.

In the March issue of This Active Life, NEA's magazine for Retired members, you'll meet retiree-new teacher teams from Oregon, Illinois, and Arizona and discover how the program developed over the past four years. Also, you can find out more about the new NEA-Retired Intergenerational Mentoring Toolkit (available through state affiliates).

Also in this issue:

Doubles tennis kicks off our series on senior-friendly sports.

We caught up with Cissy Lacks, the former teacher from Missouri who lost her job and became a first amendment crusader.

Plus, reader favorites: People, Member Profiles, and NEA-Retired News updates.

Selections from each issue of This Active Life are available online at www.nea.org/retired and copies are available from NEA Interactive Media: 1201 16th St. N.W., Suite 710, Washington, DC 20036, (202) 822-7207.
