NEA is once again revving its engines to put the “across” in Read Across America. Four Cat-a-Van tours hit the road February 25 and will travel through March 7, bringing the gift of reading to thousands of schoolchildren.
Go west, young Cat
Covering more than 2,700 miles, the Cat-a-Vans are visiting students in 19 cities and 11 states, including the District of Columbia. And for the first time, we're heading West—visiting Arizona, Colorado, Nevada, Oregon, Utah, and Washington State. On the East coast, Seuss is on the loose in Connecticut, Maryland, New Jersey, New York, Pennsylvania, and Washington, D.C., as the Cat in the Hat rides his own wacky and wild reading-styled “living room on wheels.”
For extra inspiration, the Cat-a-Vans are providing an estimated 20,000 books and other goodies. Through NEA’s Books Across America—a program designed to give the gift of reading to those in need—thousands of dollars in cash grants are being provided to public schools and their libraries.
In recent years, Cat-a-Vans have traveled through Alabama, Florida, Georgia, Kentucky, Louisiana, Mississippi, North Carolina, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Virginia, and West Virginia.
