“Get ready!” NEA President Dennis Van Roekel told the delegates on Sunday, “because ESEA reauthorization is on the way!”
Judging by the enthusiastic response from the delegates, NEA’s 3.2 million members are ready.
NEA Executive Committee member and chair of the NEA ESEA Advisory Committee Christy Levings gave delegates a review of the Association’s ESEA activities so far in 2009 and a preview of the action plan when ESEA reauthorization kicks into high gear in early 2010.
It is imperative to overhaul the No Child Left Behind Act, said Levings, “and we will need your support and expertise like never before.”
Levings said NEA will partner with the Obama Administration in this effort, pointing out that Secretary Arne Duncan has made it clear that he intends to focus on clear goals, abundant resources, and greater flexibility. In other words, turn the current law on its head. “The Obama administration” said Levings “will drive the agenda for ESEA reauthorization.”
She said NEA’s campaign will be guided by its eight principles for ESEA reauthorization, which include transforming the federal role from micromanager to partner, helping all students achieve a great education, and creating a new, more inclusive accountability system.
“The NEA is ready! Your NEA lobbyists are ready! The ESEA advisory committee is ready!” Levings declared. “The question is: Are you ready?”
“NEA members can influence the details, alter the rhetoric, and create teachable moments.”
The work starts today. Levings called on every NEA members to first join the conversation. She announced the creation of a special new area on NEA.org on which members can share their stories and ideas.
“With these stories we will build and strengthen partnerships and positive working relationships,” Levings said. “And through these partnerships, we will have a strong voice. Let’s roll up our sleeves and get to work!”
