Atlanta: Final stop for NEA’s Read Across America tour

Atlanta Children's Museum hosts finale of 6-city reading tour

NEA’s Read Across America tour reached its final destination in Atlanta, Ga. for it’s last leg of a six-city trek, which honored the 112th birthday of Dr. Seuss.

The Children’s Museum of Atlanta, which is known for play-based exploration and learning, welcomed 200 preschool-aged children from Renaissance Elementary School for story time with Earl Wiman and Eric Brown, executive committee members of NEA.

The two read and performed skits from Green Eggs and Ham, which was published in 1960 and has been considered by educators and parents one of the greatest books for kids.

Special guest Sid Chapman, president of the Georgia Association of Educators, led the group in the Reader’s Oath. Other crowd pleasers included the Cat in the Hat, along with Thing 1 and Thing 2.

This year’s Read Across America tour reached more than a thousand children. Along the way, the tour highlighted the recently released book, What Pet Should I Get? In 2013—22 years after the death of Theodor Seuss Geisel—the manuscript was found in the author’s home in San Diego, Ca.

According to Random House, the book was likely written between 1958 and 1962.

Since 1997, Read Across America has grown to where it now engages an estimated 45 million educators, parents, and students in cities and towns across the nation. The program was created to motivate children to read by making it fun. Research has shown that children who are motivated to read and spend more time reading get a head start in language and literacy skills and do better in school.

The success of NEA’s Read Across America has attracted some of the biggest names in politics, entertainment and sports to help children discover the joy of reading. In addition to First Lady Michelle Obama, past celebrity participants have included Jessica Alba, Green Bay Packers wide receiver Donald Driver, Mehcad Brooks, Carrie Underwood, Gwyneth Paltrow, Alex Rodriguez, Serena Williams, Selena Gomez, Shaquille O’Neal, and many others.
