Read Across Hawaii

Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers

NEA and its affiliate, the Hawaii State Teachers Association (HSTA), kicked off this year’s “NEA’s Read Across America” program with reading events in Honolulu and Wailuka to emphasize the theme “Celebrating a Nation of Diverse Readers,” with a selection of books featured in the Read Across America resource calendar and poster. Educator Michelle Sasaki joined NEA Director (HI) Cliff Fukuda and other association leaders for school visits that also featured students’ favorite Hawaiian authors and illustrators. To order copies of the calendar, go here. Also, don’t forget to check out the array of resources, based on each book, available from our partner Reading is Fundamental at rif.org/nea.

NEA-HSTA member Michelle Sasaki, a kindergarten teacher at Hickam Elementary in Honolulu, reads
“Punia and the King of Sharks,” a Hawaiian folk tale adapted by Lee Wardlaw, to Louise Cayetano’s
class at Fern Elementary School in Honolulu.

NEA Director for Hawaii, Cliff Fukuda, who also serves on the Read Across America Advisory
Committee, visits students at Fern Elementary in Honolulu. Students in Ms. Cayetano’s class
check out the books featured in the 2017-18 NEA’s Read Across America resource calendar.

NEA-HSTA member Michelle Sasaki, a kindergarten teacher at Hickam Elementary, Honolulu, HI, reads
“Mele the Crab Finds the Way Out,” to Alan Isbell’s fourth-grade class at Wailuka Elementary School..

Students in Mr. Isbell’s fourth-grade class at Wailuka Elementary get an early start to year-long reading
by reviewing books featured in the 2017-18 NEA’s Read Across America resource calendar and poster.

Secondary Literacy
Do you want to inspire your students to think critically, to analyze works, and to use their imaginations on a daily basis? Do you want to explore ways you can integrate reading into writing curricula and writing into reading curricula in your high school classroom? Join us at the Integrating Reading and Writing 9th-12th group to share, explore, and discuss ways for teachers of all content areas to link these two important life skills together in order to help students get the most out of themselves every day.
