Looking Ahead

Some predictions are easier to make than others.

Former New York Mets manager Casey Stengel was once asked about the future prospects for a pair of 20-year-old players.  "In 10 years, Ed Kranepool has a chance to be a star," Stengel replied, adding "in 10 years, the other guy has a chance to be 30."

Our cover story this month looks ahead at what the new school year may have in store for practitioners of the profession. We explore education issues, as well as matters that affect you outside of school hours—and no discussion of extracurricular subjects would be complete without a look at the crucial fall elections.

Also in this issue, we hope to help you extend your future with tips on healthy living; you'll meet the new NEA leadership team; and some of your colleagues, in their own words, consider how their students may remember them in years to come.

And whatever the future holds, all of us wish you the very best possible 2008—09 school year.
