Letter to the Senate Opposing any Amendments to the Economic Recovery Package

February 03, 2009

Dear  Senator:

We are deeply concerned that amendments may be offered to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that would cut funding allocated for education, including threats to funding in the State Stabilization Fund.  We urge you to VOTE NO on any such amendment.  Votes associated with these issues may be included in the NEA Legislative Report Card for the 111th Congress.

NEA strongly supports the proposed increased investments in education included in the economic recovery package as well as the proposed State Stabilization Fund, much of which is targeted to education.  Investments in education offer an effective approach to stimulating the economy, saving and creating jobs, and shoring up distressed communities.  Education funding reaches every community in the nation and is targeted to those areas with the greatest needs.

Again, we urge you to oppose any efforts to cut education funding or reduce the State Stabilization Fund, regardless of where the funds would be redirected.

Sincerely,

Diane Shust
