Letter the Senate Supporting an Amendment by Senator Shaheen to Increase Funding in the Economic Recovery Bill for Higher Education Infrastructure

February 06, 2009

Dear Senator:

We urge your support for an amendment offered by Senator Shaheen to the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act that would increase the investment for higher education infrastructure.  Votes associated with this issue may be included in the NEA Legislative Report Card for the 111th Congress.

Investments in infrastructure will save and create jobs in the construction and supporting industries and will help ensure postsecondary students access to the state-of-the-art learning environments so critical for the 21st Century.  The Shaheen amendment will increase funding targeted for these purposes from $3.5 billion to the $6 billion provided in the House-passed bill.  This funding will allow the renovation and modernization of classrooms and buildings at hundreds of colleges and universities across the country.

We urge your support for this amendment.

Sincerely,
