Letter to the Senate in Support of the Economic Recovery Bill
February 10, 2009
On behalf of the National Education Association’s (NEA) 3.2 million members, we urge you to support passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act. We support the critically-needed funds for education and other priorities in the package, although we are disappointed that education funding was reduced from the original proposal.
Our nation’s families and communities are hurting. We are confronting the most severe economic problems in generations. Millions of Americans are struggling. We must act quickly and responsibly to enact a plan as bold as the challenges we face. The investments in education remaining in the bill — increased funding for special education and Title I, flexible funding that will go directly to school districts, and tax credits on school modernization bonds — will take pressure off strained state budgets and put money back into our communities.
We thank the Senate for your work on this critically important matter. We urge passage of the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, and we look forward to working with the House and Senate in the coming days to ensure the best possible final package for our nation.
