Letter to the Conferees About the Retiree Payment Provision

February 10, 2009

Dear Conferee:

As a follow-up to our earlier letter, we would like to express our support for inclusion in the conference agreement for the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act of the one-time $300 payment for retirees provided in the Senate-passed bill.

The one-time payment provided in the Senate bill will put more money into the hands of vulnerable individuals and help jump-start the economy.  Retirees contribute significantly to the economies of the communities in which they live.  Providing this one-time payment will help retirees infuse more money into their local communities.

We also urge you to ensure that this payment is available to all retirees, including those not receiving Social Security.  The Senate provision excludes approximately twenty-five percent of all state and local government workers-- including teachers, police, firefighters, and many others.  Excluding these public pensioners from the $300 payment is highly unfair.  Teachers and other public employees have spent their lives serving their communities and deserve to receive the same payment as other retirees.

Again, we urge to accept the Senate one-time payment for retirees in the final conference agreement, while amending the provision to include all retirees.

Thank you.

Sincerely,

Diane Shust
