Kathie Axtell, an education support professional (ESP) in the Olympia School District won NEA's highest honor for ESPs.

Her work in training and professional development of ESPs has made her a powerful partner and leader.

Axtell also won the ESP of the Year award in her home state. She said, "I love bringing information to people ... making them think about what they do with kids."

The award was presented to Axtell March 13 during a banquet at NEA's annual conference for education support professionals.

More than 1,200 members who attended the Orlando, Florida meeting honed their leadership skills and learned how to strengthen their links with the families, schools, and communities they support.

"We're professionals and I want [ESPs] to feel like professionals when they walk into their buildings," Axtell said.
