Letter to Representatives Kind, Holt, Inslee, Wamp, and Susan Davis Thanking them for Introducing the FIT Kids Act

March 20, 2009

Dear Representative:

Thank you for your leadership in introducing the Fitness Integrated with Teaching Kids (FIT Kids) Act (H.R. 1585).

NEA believes that physical activity and exercise are essential for good health and must be encouraged during students’ developmental years.  We also believe that a comprehensive program of physical education should be provided in all schools.  Children’s health has a direct impact on their ability to learn and succeed in school.  In fact, evidence suggests that healthy, physically-fit children learn more effectively and are more successful academically.

Yet, schools are cutting back on physical education.  Only 3.8 percent of elementary schools, 7.9
percent of middle schools, and 2.1 percent of high schools provide daily physical education or its equivalent for the entire school year, and 22 percent of schools do not require students to take any physical education at all.  As a result, fewer children are learning about healthy lifestyles, and fewer are physically active during the school day.

Your bill would help address this problem by promoting physical education and activity in school programs, and supporting professional development for faculty and staff to promote children’s healthy lifestyles and physical activity.  We thank you for your commitment to helping our nation’s children develop and maintain healthy lifestyles and look forward to working with you on these very important issues.

Sincerely,
