Letter to Representatives Grijalva and Rahall supporting the Public Lands Service Corps Act
March 31, 2009
The National Education Association is pleased to offer our support for the Public Lands Service Corps Act of 2009 (H.R. 1612). This bill will help repair and restore our nation’s public lands while employing and training thousands of young Americans and promoting a culture of public service.
NEA supports efforts to provide Americans with opportunities to serve their communities. Particularly in these troubling economic times, community service can play a critical role in rebuilding and strengthening areas in need. In addition, participation in community service can provide real-world experience that will help educate and prepare today’s youth and displaced workers for new job opportunities.
H.R. 1612 would carry out important projects on public lands while, at the same time, providing diverse and disadvantaged young people with opportunities to pursue careers in conservation and resource management. We are particularly pleased that the bill would help engage new participants in such service, especially from underrepresented populations.
We thank you for your leadership in introducing this important legislation.
