Letter to the full Congress Urging Passage of the FY10 Budget Resolution

April 28, 2009

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the National Education Association's (NEA) 3.2 million members, we strongly urge you to Vote Yes on final passage of the FY 2010 Congressional Budget Resolution.  Votes associated with these issues may be included in the NEA Legislative Report Card for the 111th Congress.

NEA believes that the Budget Resolution should reflect the priorities of our nation, including ensuring all of our children a quality education and paving the way for access to affordable health care for all.  The final Budget agreement meets these standards.

We are very pleased that the agreement crafted by conferees will allow us to build on the bold, historic, and long overdue increases for education provided in the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, from early childhood through post-secondary education and training.  Investing in education makes both good fiscal sense and good public policy.  Funding targeted to quality public schools will see the greatest return on taxpayer money and will strengthen the entire economy.

We also strongly support reconciliation language included in the final agreement that will pave the way for action on health care reform and college affordability.  To fix the economy we must fix health care.  We need a national solution now and we cannot afford to allow a handful of health care opponents to block real health care reform this year.  The included language is critical to ensuring that we can engage in a full debate on these vital issues.

We believe conferees have crafted an agreement that will renew our economy and help our nation’s most vulnerable children and families.  Again, we urge your support for the FY10 Budget Resolution.

Sincerely,
