President Obama’s Budget Builds on Historic Investment in Quality Public Schools

WASHINGTON - May 07, 2009 -

President Barack Obama’s proposed budget, released Thursday, builds on historic funding increases for public education provided in the economic stimulus legislation.

The following can be attributed to NEA President Dennis Van Roekel:

“The president’s budget has the right priorities, including investing in quality public schools for every student. The budget builds on the historic investment in public education provided in the economic stimulus legislation, with new investments in early childhood education and expanding opportunities for students to attend college.

We do not support funding of the DC voucher program because we believe it does not fix the system and provides a dubious alternative to only some. We also believe that Congress' approach to ending the DC voucher program after the next school year is the correct one.

We look forward to working with the administration and Congress to protect the basic right of every student to receive a quality education.”
