Students Develop Skills in Construction Program
By Dan Morgenroth, Brooklyn, New York
I am a math teacher at Lyons Community School in Brooklyn, New York. I have collaborated with two colleagues to start a program called Urban Workshop NYC, in which at-risk students develop academic skills, real-world skills, and general engagement in learning through community construction projects around the five boroughs.
Our students have built a rainwater harvesting shelter for a Brooklyn community garden, and industrial shelving units for a worker-owned cooperative in the South Bronx that sells salvaged construction materials.
