Letter to Representatives Titus and Woolsey Supporting Their Legislation to Create National Classified Employees of the Year Awards

May 19, 2009

Dear Representatives Titus and Woolsey:

On behalf of the National Education Association’s (NEA) 3.2 million members, we would like to thank you for introducing legislation to create a National Classified School Employees of the Year Award.

Classified school employees—including paraeducators, clerical assistants, school bus drivers, custodians, food service workers, technicians, custodians, school nurses, and security professionals — provide essential services to America’s public schools and institutions of higher education.  As an integral part of the public education system, classified school employees promote student achievement, ensure student safety, and contribute to the establishment and promotion of a positive instructional environment.

Classified school employees strive for excellence in all areas relative to the education community.  We are very pleased, therefore, that your legislation would provide long overdue recognition for their outstanding contributions to our nation’s schools and the students they serve.

We thank you for your leadership on this important issue and look forward to continuing to work with you in support of all who work tirelessly every day to ensure great public schools for every student.

Sincerely,
