The Association represents approximately 2,000 members at the University of British Columbia, including all full-time faculty, lecturers, professional librarians, program directors in the Centre for Continuing Education, and part-time faculty holding at least 4 month appointments at 50% of normal full-time duties.

The principal task of the Councils is to distribute funds made available by their respective Secretaries of State for the provision of education and the undertaking of research by higher education institutions in England, Scotland and Wales. They are also required to assess the quality of that provision.
