Professional Staff
According to the College and University Professional Association for Human Resources 2006-07 Mid-Level Administrative and Professional Salary Survey, non-teaching staff—other professionals—saw median salary increases ranging from 3.5 to 4.0 percent. These are positions that require a minimum of a bachelor’s degree, but do not include any managerial responsibility. Examples include librarians, counselors, computer programmers, and accountants. Some employees in these positions may be paid according to the faculty salary schedule, but they do not teach. Public institutions, both community colleges and bachelor’s institutions received 4 percent increases; private two-year institutions also saw an increase of 4 percent (Chart 7).
The median salaries in all job categories are higher than they were in 2005–06 (Table 5). At public institutions, more than half of the job classifications saw salary increases of 4.0 percent; last year, the greatest increase was 3.5 percent. At private institutions, the increases were more modest. External affairs is the job category with the greatest increase—3.9 percent.
