The House of Representatives passed the Student Aid and Fiscal Responsibility Act, H.R. 3221 September 17

The bill provides the largest increase ever for Pell Grants, streamlines the student loan program, and provides a substantial pool of grant money targeted for community colleges to further President Obama’s American Graduation Initiative.  The bill now goes to the Senate, where committee action is expected in the coming months.

NEA wrote a letter to the Full House outline our reasons for supporting the bill.

The bill is an essential step in our efforts to enact increased public investment in higher education, which not only benefits individual students, but is proven time and again to benefit all of society.

Here is a summary of the bill’s higher education provisions from NEA Policy and Lobbying Staff.
