From Capitol to Campus
Working with Health Care for AMERICA NOW! (HCAN) and integrating a legislative, media, and grassroots organizing strategy, NEA is at the forefront of the current healthcare reform debate.
Three main issues are at the heart of NEA’s position: 1) quality, affordable healthcare for all; 2) no tax on health care benefits or on insurers and employers that offer high-value plans; and 3) support for a government-sponsored public health insurance option.
The first of these goals is both a moral and practical imperative. With some 46 million people in this country, including 8 million children, having no health coverage, we must ensure that every person has access to care that is both good and affordable.
With regard to the taxation of benefits, many public education employees have traded salary increases for the long-term security of a comprehensive health plan. Cutting their benefits or forcing them to pay more taxes would unfairly penalize them.
Taxing insurance companies or employers who offer high-value plans would lead educators to pay more out of pocket or lose hard-earned benefits, or both.
Finally, a public health insurance option will compete with the private insurance industry in terms of cost and quality, bringing down costs for everyone.
NEA is committed to its healthcare strategy and is depending on all NEA members to participate in the grassroots effort to bring about real, workable health care reform.
