Letter to the Senators who Voted in Support of the Jobs Package

February 25, 2010

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the National Education Association’s (NEA) 3.2 million members, we would like to thank you for your vote in support of H.R. 2847, the Jobs for Main Street Act — an important first step in providing essential resources to create/save jobs and jumpstart the economy.  Your vote reflected the importance of quick action on jobs legislation, as so many in our nation continue to struggle.

We were very pleased that the bill included funding for school modernization in the form of an extended and improved Build America Bonds program.  This program, originally authorized under the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act, is very efficient and cost effective for state and local governments, and demand for it is high. Passage of these provisions will help put Americans back to work by creating greater opportunities to build, repair, and modernize schools, and generating construction related jobs in local communities in every state.

Passage of this bill reflects just one piece of a broader strategy needed to create/save jobs and boost economic recovery.  Ongoing state budget crises and continued high unemployment rates necessitate further congressional action. We look forward to continuing to work with you to address these urgent needs, including by providing state assistance to create public sector jobs and by extending for six months the higher federal Medicaid match.

We thank you again for your vote on this important legislation.

Sincerely,

Kim Anderson
