Letter to the House Urging a Yes Vote on Legislation to Create Classified School Employees of the Year Awards

March 15, 2010

Dear Representative:

On behalf of the National Education Association’s (NEA) 3.2 million members, we urge you to VOTE YES on legislation (H.R. 2377) to create a National Classified School Employees of the Year Award, scheduled for floor consideration this week.  Votes associated with this issue may be included in the NEA Legislative Report Card for the 111th Congress.

Classified school employees—including paraeducators, clerical assistants, school bus drivers, custodians, food service workers, technicians, custodians, school nurses, and security professionals — provide essential services to America’s public schools and institutions of higher education.  As an integral part of the public education system, these education support professionals promote student achievement, ensure student safety, and contribute to the establishment and promotion of a positive instructional environment.

Education support professionals strive for excellence in all areas relative to the education community.  H.R. 2377 would provide long overdue recognition for their outstanding contributions to our nation’s schools and the students they serve.

We urge your support for this important legislation.

Sincerely,

Kim Anderson
Director of Government Relations
