New Faces of Leadership in the Asian American and Pacific Islander Community

NEA recently hosted a conference organized  by APIAVote on the increasing  importance of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders in public office.

Speakers at the “New Faces of Leadership”  conference included Norman Y. Mineta, the first Asian American cabinet secretary in American  history, Gary Locke, Secretary of Commerce, Tammy Duckworth, Assistant Secretary of the Veterans Administration, and Sonal Shah, head of the White House Office of Social Innovation and Civic Participation.

These leaders highlighted the value and importance of diversity in political leadership, and urged greater civic engagement by the Asian American and Pacific Islander community.

John Wilson, Executive Director of NEA, provided opening remarks applauding the Obama Administration’s appointments and highlighting NEA’s strong partnerships with Asian American and Pacific Islander groups and the many education issues NEA works on with the community.
