Letter to the House on the COMPETES Act
May 12, 2010
On behalf of the National Education Association's (NEA) 3.2 million members, we would like to express our support for the America Creating Opportunities to Meaningfully Promote Excellence in Technology, Education and Science (America COMPETES) Act (H.R. 5116).
NEA believes that a focus on quality math and science education is essential to the future strength of our nation. Simply put, if we are to position our nation at the forefront of an increasingly global society, we must equip our students today with the math and science skills they will need to lead the way tomorrow.
We particularly urge your support for an amendment offered by Representative George Miller (D-CA) that would stipulate that any institution of higher education that employs members of a labor union could receive funds authorized by the bill only if the institution responds within 15 days to union requests for information to which the union is legally entitled (the time frame could be extended by mutual agreement). Votes associated with this amendment may be included in the NEA Legislative Report Card for the 111th Congress.
The Miller amendment permits labor unions to file a complaint with the agency overseeing the funding authorized by the bill. If the information is not provided within 30 days and the funding agency determines that the complaint is valid, funding would be suspended.
We thank you for your consideration of our views on these important issues.
