“I’m a political nerd,” says Aaron Merkin—but not without reason. “Politics affects everything in education. Everything from our salary to our class sizes to the assessments we’re told to give our kids—and when we give them.” The former Wyoming student chair joined the Wyoming Education Association Government Relations Committee last year, his first as a teacher. Now he demands answers from candidates: “Class size! Are you going to allow it to go up? What about testing? How do you feel about it?” When you walk into the voting booth, you should know the answers to these questions, says Merkin.
“What’s important to you?” he asks. “Email your legislators and tell them.”
