Letter to the Senate in support of Elena Kagan’s Confirmation as an Associate Justice of the Supreme Court

August 03, 2010

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the 3.2 million members of the National Education Association, I urge you to support confirmation of Solicitor General Elena Kagan as an Associate Justice of the United States Supreme Court.

She is eminently qualified to sit on the nation’s highest court. As President Obama observed, “Elena Kagan is one of this country's leading legal minds, and has shown throughout this process that, if confirmed, she would be a fair and impartial Supreme Court justice who understands how decisions made by the court affect the lives of everyday Americans.”

Kagan has also demonstrated that she appreciates the vital role that teachers play and the principles that guide our profession. When she accepted the nomination to the Supreme Court, she said, “My mother was a proud public school teacher, as are my two brothers—the kind of teachers students remember for the rest of their lives. … I pray every day that I live up to the example they set.”

We believe Elena Kagan's professional qualifications and record of service will provide a foundation of fair and high-quality legal analysis that will benefit the Court and the nation.

Sincerely,
