Letter to the Senators who voted YES on the Education Jobs/FMAP Package
August 04, 2010
On behalf of the 3.2 million members of the National Education Association (NEA), the students they serve, and parents and communities across the nation, I would like to express my sincere appreciation for your vote in favor of cloture on the package to provide $10 billion to save approximately 138,000 educator jobs and fund an extension of the higher federal Medicaid match (FMAP).
This vote was extremely important to students, communities, and the future strength of our nation. The education jobs fund resources are critical to ensuring that every student has access to the programs, staff, and individual attention so essential to success. And, they are also critical to economic recovery, as saving education jobs has a ripple effect on job creation and local economies.
Your support reflected your understanding of the urgent need and sent a strong message to educators working on the front lines of education. Our members in your state, and across the nation, were watching the vote closely and are very grateful for your support.
Thank you again for standing up for what is right and for voting in support of children and public education.
