Educators endorse Cheri Bustos for election to U.S. House of Representatives
Working mother will fight for middle class, public education funding
WASHINGTON - February 09, 2012 -
The National Education Association political action committee (PAC), The NEA Fund, today endorsed Cheri Bustos for the U.S. House of Representatives. If elected, Bustos would represent voters in the 17th district, which covers much of West Central Illinois. Bustos faces two opponents in the state’s upcoming Democratic primary.
“Educators are proud to endorse Cheri Bustos for the U.S. House,” said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. “As a working mother of three, she understands the importance of a great public school education. Cheri has vowed to fight for the middle class and for adequate funding for public schools. She also has pledged to work to expand opportunities for lifetime learning.”
Bustos says she will seek more assistance for higher education. “It is an outrage that the average college graduate enters the workforce with more than $25,000 in student loan debts,” Bustos said. “If education is the priority we say it is, then we need to back it up by protecting grant programs and working to reduce student loan costs. “I’m honored to receive NEA’s endorsement and I want all the people of the 17th Congressional District to know that I will be their advocate in Washington, DC.”
“IEA is pleased to recommend Cheri Bustos for the 17th district because she will fight for more resources for our schools,” said Illinois Education Association President Cinda Klickna. “Cheri will work to protect grant programs for college students and help reduce the debt that graduates carry when they enter the workforce.”
The NEA Fund provides direct financial support to recommended candidates for president, the U.S. House and the U.S. Senate, who will fight improve public education, and support students, teachers and staff.
