Connecticut passes comprehensive education legislation

The Connecticut state legislature approved a sweeping education reform bill that should serve as a national model for including the expertise of education professionals when writing such legislation. The legislation raises education standards, honors collective bargaining, expands access and addresses critical issues of quality in schools.
“The key takeaway today is that parents and educators know what is best for their students,” said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. “Most importantly, educators had a seat at the table in shaping policy and their expertise was essential in leading to decisions that will benefit students and schools. Today Connecticut students won, because elected officials listened to the experts — Connecticut parents and educators.”
The legislation ensures policy decisions made in Hartford support the whole child, by ensuring quality early childhood education, early literacy, and that health and social supports are in place for disadvantaged students. The legislation takes important steps to address teacher quality. These reforms weren't based in theory or hypothesis, but were firmly grounded in policies that have proven track records.
