Vice President Biden to address educators at NEA annual meeting
Dr. Jill Biden also to address nation’s largest labor and education group
WASHINGTON - June 29, 2012 -
Vice President Joe Biden will address the National Education Association's 150th Annual Meeting and 91st Representative Assembly (RA) in Washington, D.C. at 10:00 a.m. on Tuesday, July 3rd. Every year, educators from every state come together at the RA to address pressing issues facing the teaching profession, students and schools. Dr. Jill Biden, an educator, also will address the group.
The delegates represent NEA's more than 3 million members living across the United States. NEA is the nation's largest labor union and represents one in every 100 Americans. NEA RA delegates overwhelmingly voted to recommend the reelection of President Barack Obama during last year's annual meeting in Chicago, making the NEA the first labor union to formally endorse the President's reelection bid. More than 15,000 delegates, family and friends will gather to hear Vice President Biden’s speech.
The top decision-making body for NEA, the RA sets Association policy for the coming year. Delegates adopt the strategic plan and budget, resolutions, the legislative program, and other Association policies, and they vote on proposed amendments to NEA's Constitution and Bylaws. The NEA Representative Assembly is the world's largest democratic deliberative body.
The theme for this year's Annual Meeting is NEA: We Educate America.
