Oklahoma educator re-elected to NEA Executive Committee

Annual meeting delegates vote for teacher Greg Johnson

WASHINGTON - July 03, 2012 -

Nearly 9,000 delegates to the National Education Association Representative Assembly (RA) voted to keep Oklahoma teacher, Greg Johnson, on the Executive Committee. Johnson was first elected to the Association’s Executive Committee in 2009. He will begin serving his second three-year term in September.

“I’m honored to have the opportunity to continue work on behalf of public school students and educators,” Johnson said. “America’s public schools continue to face many challenges and we need to work together now more than ever to help ensure student success. Public education should be the number one priority for lawmakers, from the local to national level.”

“As a classroom teacher Greg knows the challenges and difficulties public school educators and students face,” said NEA President Dennis Van Roekel. “He understands how important it is for educators to have the proper training, tools and resources to help students succeed. I am confident Greg will draw on his years of experience on the Executive Committee, as well as his years in the classroom to deliver the promise of quality public education for every student.”

Johnson is a 30-year classroom veteran. He has spent the majority of his teaching career at Mustang High School in Mustang, Okla. Johnson held several leadership positions prior to joining NEA’s Executive Committee, including serving as the Western Region’s representative on the Mission, Vision and Core Values Editing Committee, the Annual Review Committee and the 2008 NEA RA Board Steering Committee.

The NEA Executive Committee consists of nine members—three executive officers and six members—elected at-large by the Representative Assembly. The committee is responsible for guiding NEA policy and acts for the NEA Board of Directors in between its four regularly scheduled meetings each year.
