NEA president’s statement on President Obama’s victory

“President’s reelection a win for students and educators,” says Dennis Van Roekel

WASHINGTON - November 06, 2012 -

NEA President Dennis Van Roekel responded to the reelection of President Barack Obama with the following statement:

“Americans have spoken, and they’ve chosen to move forward. From day one, NEA members have supported President Obama and his vision for America and public education. And over the past two years, they worked tirelessly on behalf of America’s public school students, who have a great team in President Obama and Vice-President Joe Biden. First Lady Michelle Obama and Dr. Jill Biden are also passionate advocates for public schools, students, and educators.

“Throughout the campaign, the president pledged to invest in education, especially in early childhood education, and to make higher education more affordable. He also promised to protect women’s rights and rebuild the middle class from the inside out.

“NEA’s 3 million members will continue to make sure the president and other elected officials put America’s children and hardworking families first. We will work together to continue to rebuild the nation’s economy while protecting core American values like quality public education and access to health care, and critical programs like Medicaid, Medicare, and Social Security.

Van Roekel concluded, “That work begins tomorrow. But tonight, we will celebrate.”
