Letter to Senator Jim Webb supporting the Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act (S. 3140)

July 17, 2008

Dear Senator Webb:

On behalf of the National Education Association's (NEA) 3.2 million members, we would like to express our support for the Federal Employees Paid Parental Leave Act (S. 3140).

NEA strongly supports your proposal to offer paid leave to federal employees following the birth or adoption of a child. We believe such leave is essential to the health and well-being of families and children. Specifically, in addition to relieving family burdens, allowing new parents to take leave from work helps ensure the parental involvement so essential to a child's physical, emotional, and intellectual development.

By providing four weeks of paid leave, your bill would ensure that families have the necessary time for bonding with new children without worrying about the financial consequences of lost work time. We thank you for your leadership on this important issue and look forward to continuing to work with you in support of children and families.

Sincerely,

Diane Shust, Director of Government Relations
