Letter of condolence to Inouye family

WASHINGTON - December 18, 2012 -

NEA President Dennis Van Roekel issued the following letter to the Inouye family:

Dear Mrs. Inouye:

On behalf of the more than three million members of the National Education Association, I would like to extend my deepest condolences to you and your family on the passing of Senator Inouye.

Senator Inouye was a true American hero who served his nation and the state of Hawaii with honor.   His long and distinguished career in the United States Congress reflected his passion for fighting injustice and addressing inequities. He was known for putting the needs of the nation above partisan politics and for working across the aisle to represent his constituents.  He was a strong leader, particularly as Chair of the Senate Appropriations Committee, and was instrumental in pushing for improved education and healthcare for all children, health and human services in rural communities, affordable housing, and the protection of the nation's natural resources.

Hawaii educators are particularly grateful for his support, and for his unfailing commitment to meet with them and hear their concerns.  His passing is a great loss to the United States Senate, the state of Hawaii, and the entire nation.

Again, I offer my deepest sympathies on your loss.

Dennis Van Roekel
