Letter Senator Klobuchar supporting the Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act

January 25, 2013

Dear Senator Klobuchar:

On behalf of the more than three million members of the National Education Association (NEA), we would like to express our support for the Medicare Prescription Drug Price Negotiation Act.  We thank you for your leadership on this important legislation — which is critical to reducing the costs of prescription drugs for America's seniors and in helping to preserve Medicare benefits for current and future beneficiaries.

Millions of seniors, many of them retired educators and education support professionals living on fixed incomes, face escalating medication costs. Too often, seniors must pay for medication at the expense of food or other necessities. This untenable situation is, in part, due to the inability of the federal government to negotiate with pharmaceutical companies, leaving individual Medicare beneficiaries with no leverage to secure discount drug prices.

By allowing the Secretary of Health and Human Services to negotiate lower drug prices, your bill will allow the Medicare program to take advantage of the market power of more than 40 million beneficiaries with prescription drug coverage. As a result, America's seniors will be able to purchase essential prescription medications at a fair price.

Again, thank you for your efforts on this very important issue.

Sincerely,

Mary Kusler
Director of Government Relations
