Letter to the Senate on the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013
April 10, 2013
On behalf of the more than three million members of the National Education Association, we urge you to vote YES on cloture on the Safe Communities, Safe Schools Act of 2013 (S. 649). Votes associated with this issue may be included in the NEA Legislative Report Card for the 113th Congress.
An NEA member poll indicates overwhelming support for stronger gun violence prevention laws, including comprehensive and enforceable background checks to prevent dangerous people from purchasing guns. In addition, we believe a comprehensive approach to providing a safe and secure learning environment includes:
- Expanded access to mental-health services.
- Supports that allow local communities to decide for themselves what kinds of school personnel are most needed, such as more counselors.
- Security enhancements to school facilities.
- Additional supports and professional development for the entire school staff in cultural competence, conflict management, and bullying prevention.
Too many students and families have lost their lives to gun violence. It is incumbent on our elected officials to debate and vote on measures that can help address the epidemic of gun violence. We strongly urge you to vote YES on cloture on S. 649 and let this critical debate move forward.
