Letter to Representative Capps on School Safety Enhancement Act

April 19, 2013

Dear Representative Capps:

On behalf of the more than three million members of the National Education Association—dedicated educators who serve and protect millions of children every day—we would like to offer our support for the School Safety Enhancement Act (H.R. 1470), which would reauthorize and strengthen the successful Secure Our Schools program.

We are pleased that H.R. 1470 would:

  • Allow schools to tailor safety measures to their individual needs
  • Develop advisory guidelines to help keep schools safe
  • Promote coordinated training by schools and local law enforcement agencies
  • Require consultation with parents, teachers, and local agencies

A secure learning environment is a critical component of a quality education. Safe and orderly schools facilitate effective teaching and learning, while violence or the threat thereof diverts attention and resources away from education. Students cannot learn and educators cannot teach when threatened by physical violence or harassment.

NEA thanks you for your leadership on this important issue. We look forward to working with you to enhance school safety.

Sincerely,

Mary Kusler
Director, Government Relations
