Letter to Senate HELP Committee on NLRB Nominations

May 15, 2013

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the more than three million members of the National Education Association (NEA), we wish to offer our views ahead of tomorrow’s Health, Education, Labor and Pensions hearing on Pending Nominations to the National Labor Relations Board (NLRB).

The NLRB ensures the rights of educators and workers to fight for better working conditions and to stand up for the salary and benefits they need to provide for their families.  These rights are in jeopardy the longer Congress delays confirming nominees to the NLRB, which departs from a long-preserved American tradition of democracy in the workplace.  This all comes at a time when millions of middle class Americans are struggling to meet their families’ basic needs.

Delaying these nominations would virtually shut down the agency and deny educators and other workers a final, enforceable order from the NLRB when they have been illegally fired, retaliated against, denied the right to bargain with their employer, or had their legal rights violated.

NEA supports the working families of this country and we urge you to join us in protecting their rights by expeditiously addressing the looming vacancies on the NLRB.

Sincerely,

Mary Kusler
Director, Government Relations
