Letter to Ed and Workforce Supporting Representative Courtney's Amendment to H.R. 1911

May 16, 2013

Dear Representative:

On behalf of the 3 million members of the National Education Association (NEA), we offer our views of support on the amendment from Representative Courtney to the Smarter Solutions for Students Act (H.R. 1911).  This amendment will extend the current student loan interest rate of 3.4% for another two years.

Passing this amendment will send a clear message to students and families that Congress does not support a huge increase in the cost of student loans. Also, with a 2- year extension, the way will be cleared for a measured and thorough debate about appropriate interest rate structures, levels and caps. Educators across the country believe every student should have access to higher education, regardless of their ability to pay. By taking the appropriate steps to ensure college is affordable for all students, Congress would be showing its commitment to a strong American workforce ready to take on the challenges of a global economy.

We look forward to working with the Committee on these and other issues in the Higher Education Act reauthorization.

Sincerely,

Mary Kusler
