Letter to Senate Banking Committee on Dr. Furman's Nomination

June 10, 2013

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the 3 million members of the National Education Association, we urge you to quickly support confirmation of Dr. Jason Furman as chairman of the Council of Economic Advisers (CEA).

Dr. Furman is exceedingly qualified to serve as chairman of the CEA, demonstrating expertise in a wide array of economic issues. Having been described by many as one of the brightest economics minds of his generation, Dr. Furman has played a central role in shaping the American Recovery and Reinvestment Act and the Affordable Care Acts, among other vital policies of the Obama Administration.

He has a long history of support for low- and middle class families on a range of issues related to tax policies, education, health care, Medicaid, Medicare, Social Security, and the economy. Throughout his public service career Dr. Furman’s support for policies that benefit children, their families, and the public education community have been invaluable.

We believe Dr. Furman’s professional qualifications and record of service provide a foundation for continuing leadership in the recovery and growth of the nation’s economy.
