Thank you Letter to the Senate for Passing of The Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744)

June 27, 2013

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the three million members of the National Education Association (NEA), we thank you for passing the Border Security, Economic Opportunity, and Immigration Modernization Act (S. 744). Through bold leadership and measured bipartisanship the Senate has today shown what the will of many can come together to accomplish.  The dreams of 11 million aspiring Americans have taken a significant step toward fruition today thanks to your work.

Educators applaud S.744 for addressing key priorities critical to our students, their families and our communities – a pathway to citizenship for 11 million aspiring Americans, promoting family unity, and inclusion of the DREAM Act. Passage of this bill means children and their families are closer to pursuing and attaining their potential as they strive toward citizenship.

S. 744 is largely reflective of the very best ideals of our country’s founding: opportunity, equality, and liberty.  These aspiring Americans want the opportunity to go to school, to work, raise a family, and seek their own path towards the American dream as full citizens. All the while doing so in a country that seeks to welcome them with open arms as one of their own – not because we owe it to them but because we recognize their story in our own history.

However, there is more to be done.  Educators know that we must all continue to work as one toward comprehensive immigration reform to turn this dream into a reality. We can see the framework, vision, and path in the work the Senate has done these past few months.  Again, thank you for passing S. 744 and for the incredible example you have set.

Sincerely,

Mary Kusler
