Letter to the Senate on Confirmation of Thomas Perez as Secretary of Labor

July 16, 2013

Dear Senator:

On behalf of the more than three million members of the National Education Association, we urge you to confirm Thomas E. Perez, currently Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the U.S. Department of Justice, to be the nation’s next Secretary of Labor.

The son of immigrants from the Dominican Republic, Perez has spent nearly his entire career in public service at the local, state, and federal level. He understands the issues faced every day by middle-class Americans, and stands ready to advocate for issues vital to them like retirement security and health care. As NEA President Dennis Van Roekel recently noted, “President Obama hit the nail on the head with his pick of Tom Perez, who has built his career working hard for America’s workers. We need someone with a strong civil rights background and a healthy respect for our public education system, and Tom definitely fits the bill.”

Perez is a consensus builder who has a proven track record working with both business and labor. He understands hard work and has fought to end bullying in schools, protect domestic workers’ rights, stop predatory lending, and also supported the expansion of medical clinics that serve the uninsured. He is the Secretary of Labor that America’s workers want and need.

We urge you to move forward now and confirm Mr. Perez so he can begin addressing the important work of the U.S. Department of Labor.

Sincerely,

Mary Kusler
Director of Government Relations
