Letter to the House Urging Support of an Amendment to the 2014 Department of Defense Appropriations Act

July 23, 2013

Dear Representative:

On behalf of the more than three million members of the National Education Association, we urge you to Vote YES on amendment #108 to the Department of Defense Appropriations Act of 2014 (H.R. 2397). Sponsored by Reps. Doug Lamborn (R-CO), Beto O’Rourke (D-TX), John Barrow (D-GA), and Lynn Jenkins (R-KS), this amendment prohibits the use of funds to implement sequestration-related furloughs of DoD civilian employees, including educators. Votes on this issue may be included in the NEA Legislative Report Card for the 113th Congress.

Tens of thousands of K-12 students attend DoD-run schools in the United States and overseas. Their schools are preparing to shut down for a week even as their parents, men and women in uniform, are fighting for our nation’s freedom.

Due to the sequester, the Department of Defense Education Activity (DoDEA) is getting ready to furlough teachers for five days and education support professionals for 11 days, a significant disruption of the school year. Shortening the school year by even one day would be a disservice to military families. In addition to classroom instruction, students will lose learning time essential to their preparation for post-secondary education and success in the global economy of the 21st century.

To ensure that the sequester does not interrupt the education of children from military families, we urge you to vote YES on amendment #108. Thank you for your attention to this vitally important matter.

Sincerely,

Mary Kusler
Director, Government Relations
