Roswell school shooting incident
Statements from NEA-New Mexico President Betty Patterson and NEA President Dennis Van Roekel
WASHINGTON - January 14, 2014 -
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the families of the two students injured in Berrendo Middle School today. We have confidence in the ability of the first responders and the staff and administrators to help students and families at this time," says National Education Association (NEA)-New Mexico President Betty Patterson responding to the school shooting this morning in Roswell, New Mexico. “The safety of our students is always a priority. Our thoughts and prayers are also with the Roswell community at this very difficult time,” she added.
NEA’s national President Dennis Van Roekel added: “As educators, we are committed to ensuring the safety of our students. The members of NEA and NEA-NM stand ready to support those families, the school and the Roswell community in this time of crisis. We will probably never know all the factors that accumulate to unleash this kind of violence, but we must commit to doing all we can to make sure students and educators are safe in our schools. Preventing gun violence, bullying prevention and greater access to mental health services are key issues that must be addressed, so educators and families can identify problems and intervene before it’s too late.”
NEA is committed to doing all that we can to help ensure the safety of America’s students and the people who work in schools, colleges and universitie. The NEA Health Information Network's School Crisis Guide helps everyone concerned respond to the situation in the most helpful manner possible.
