Letter to the Senate Judiciary Committee: Confirm Adegbile as Assistant Attorney General for Civil Rights
February 06, 2014
On behalf of the more than three million members of the National Education Association and the students they serve, we express our strong support for the nomination of Debo P. Adegbile as Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice, to be voted on Thursday.
A consensus builder in his work in both the private and public sectors, Mr. Adegbile has earned the respect and admiration of a broad range of colleagues, lawyers, and leaders for his deep knowledge of — and extensive experience with — civil rights issues. After graduating from Connecticut College and the New York University School of Law, he was a litigator at a leading law firm and served in several capacities at the NAACP Legal Defense and Educational Fund. He is a member of the board of trustees of his college and middle school, and frequently speaks to students ranging in age from elementary school to law school about the importance of the Constitution, civil rights, and educational opportunity. He has twice defended the Voting Rights Act, our nation’s most successful civil rights law, before the United States Supreme Court.
As Assistant Attorney General for the Civil Rights Division of the United States Department of Justice, Mr. Adegbile would ensure that America fulfills the promise engraved above the doorway to our nation’s highest court: equal justice under law. We urge you to support swift confirmation of this highly qualified nominee during this Thursday’s committee session.
